The shock absorbers on the rear axle damp the oscillations arising from the suspension (by converting friction into heat) and thereby limit the travel of the oscillations. This ensures the wheels have a good grip on the ground and prevents swaying and lasting post-oscillation of the vehicle. The shock absorbers for vehicles with a high centre of gravity (e.g. tank/silo body) have particularly high damping forces in order to counteract the increased rolling inclination, thereby reducing the intensity of the body motion.

Differential locks on driven front and rear axles ensure optimal handling under conditions where friction and surface differ and are thus able to prevent a vehicle from becoming stuck in off-road terrain or on a slippery road, for example. Extended range of application thanks to increased traction even where friction conditions differ (e.g. roads that are slippery on one side only), on unpaved or slippery surfaces (e.g. ice, snow, sand, gravel) or when the vehicle is positioned at an extreme angle.
SAFETY AND BRAKE SYSTEM
The ABS anti-lock braking system uses sensors to detect the speed of each wheel during braking and regulates the brake pressure at each individual wheel. ABS is a component of the Electronic Braking System EBS. The wheel is prevented from locking up.
The anti-slip control (ASR) prevents the drive wheels from spinning when moving off or accelerating. This improves traction, particularly on slippery surfaces such as ice, snow, loose chippings or wet cobbles, and ensures stable driving. The electronic stability program (ESP) automatically intervenes in the engine management and brake system if there is a risk of skidding or tipping over. ESP helps to defuse dangerous situations, such as cornering too quickly, slippery roads, emergency braking, and hectic evasive manoeuvres, and reduces the risk of accidents.
Front and rear
The pneumatically actuated disc brakes on the front and rear axle are equipped with internally ventilated brake discs which, with their optimum heat dissipation, ensure a sustained high brake output.
The high-performance engine brake MAN EVBec (Exhaust Valve Brake electronically controlled) is a wear-free continuous brake that is dependent on the engine. Its braking effect increases with increasing engine speed, independently of the road speed. Compared with the MAN EVB, it is characterised by a greater braking effect that can also be controlled in stages.
If there is adequate pressure in the brake system, the front axle is pneumatically integrated into the parking brake in addition to the rear axle. The front axle braked in this way stabilises the vehicle when the rear end is lifted and ensures that it remains steady even under high tensile load.
MAN EasyStart for TipMatic® provides support when moving off on roads at slight inclines. If the system is activated via a button on the instrument panel, the moving-off aid automatically functions each time the vehicle is braked to a complete stop using the service brake.
The air dryer limits the air humidity in the compressed-air system to around 30 %. The air dryer has a granulate cartridge which absorbs the moisture in the air and also cleans the compressed air by removing dirt contamination. The heater cartridge switches itself on automatically when the temperature falls below approximately 6 °C and switches itself off when the temperature exceeds approx. 30 °C. Vehicles that are equipped with a heated air dryer can be operated without problems in cold climates.
The brake function halt brake is a convenience system. It facilitates regular short stops, e.g. in refuse collection operations, and prevents the vehicle (including trailer/semitrailer) from rolling away. After activating the halt brake, all rear axles (incl. leading and trailing axles) are braked. The halt brake must be activated manually by the driver.

The LIN three-phase alternator ensures the vehicle power supply for standard applications in a particularly efficient manner. This almost doubles the service life of the alternator.
There are a large number of electrical consumers in modern vehicles. The central locking with remote control allows all doors to be locked and unlocked either remotely or manually with the vehicle key. The integrated comfort closing function additionally permits open windows and (if present) the electric lifting roof to be closed. In addition, the functioning of the exterior lighting on the tractor vehicle and trailer or semitrailer can be tested by means of the buttons on the vehicle key (light test).
